Deerfield Nature Trail Stop 2: Bear Corn

Known by many names (bear corn, squawroot, or American cancer-root), bear corn is a parasitic plant that can be found growing around oak and beech trees. Lacking chlorophyll to photosynthesize, the plant relies on nutrients taken from its host tree. The yellow seed pods it produces are a food source for a wide variety of forest animals.
