For a few thousand years, the climate in Bandelier has been similar to what it is today. Currently, this area receives most of its 16 inches of annual precipitation in the form of snow and summer thunderstorms. Spring is often windy, as are the summer storms.

Both wind and water are the major forces that move and carve rocks. These changes are usually slow and modest, but the forces of nature can also generate quick, dramatic changes during events such as flash floods.

Maps + permits: long-distance trails like this often require permits for through-hiking, backcountry camping, or specific sections (especially in National Parks). Check with the maintaining organisation listed above and the relevant land manager before booking travel.

When to go: hiking seasons vary widely with elevation, latitude, and snowpack. Through-hikers traditionally start the AT in March-April (Springer northbound) and the PCT in late April (Campo northbound). High-elevation western trails (CDT, JMT, Wonderland) generally aren't passable until July.
