Fort Pickens Bay Trail

The Bay Trail is a 0.15 mile trail beginning at the north side of Fort Pickens Campground Loop E. Visitors may park at overflow parking located directly in front of the trailhead, or walk from their campsite. The Florida National Scenic Trail can be found a few feet to the right.

A gently inclined, sandy slope will bring visitors up over the dunes, past coastal vegetation, and down to the Pensacola Bay. A variety of birds can frequently be seen flying overhead, including bald eagles, ospreys, great blue herons, and more. Duration: 15-30 minutes

Maps + permits: long-distance trails like this often require permits for through-hiking, backcountry camping, or specific sections (especially in National Parks). Check with the maintaining organisation listed above and the relevant land manager before booking travel.

When to go: hiking seasons vary widely with elevation, latitude, and snowpack. Through-hikers traditionally start the AT in March-April (Springer northbound) and the PCT in late April (Campo northbound). High-elevation western trails (CDT, JMT, Wonderland) generally aren't passable until July.
