Lost Mine Trail Stop #5

The Civilian Conservation Corps built this stone culvert, rock walls, and other masonry structures along the trail. From 1934 through 1937, the first group of CCC workers surveyed and laid out the Basin Road using only hand tools and a dump truck. In the process, they moved 40,000 cubic yards of earth and 5,000 yards of solid rock.

The stone culverts along the this trail and the road are excellent examples of their craftsmanship. From 1940 to 1942, a second group of CCC built the stone cottages that are located up behind the main lodge rooms in the Chisos Basin.

Practical notes

Maps + permits: long-distance trails like this often require permits for through-hiking, backcountry camping, or specific sections (especially in National Parks). Check with the maintaining organisation listed above and the relevant land manager before booking travel.

Water + supplies: water sources vary seasonally on most U.S. trails. Carry a filter and consult current trail-condition reports — through-hiker journals (PCT-L, AT Reddit, etc.) and the maintaining organisation publish regular updates.

When to go: hiking seasons vary widely with elevation, latitude, and snowpack. Through-hikers traditionally start the AT in March-April (Springer northbound) and the PCT in late April (Campo northbound). High-elevation western trails (CDT, JMT, Wonderland) generally aren't passable until July.
