Take a look down at the green oasis created by the pond. Notice the leafy vegetation such as willows, cattails, and cane. These wetlands-adapted plants are able to survive here because of the natural warm springs which provide essential moisture.

Wetland plants and soil are important agents of flood control and cleansing by slowing down rising waters and breaking down toxic pollutants which accumulate in the sediments.

When to go: hiking seasons vary widely with elevation, latitude, and snowpack. Through-hikers traditionally start the AT in March-April (Springer northbound) and the PCT in late April (Campo northbound). High-elevation western trails (CDT, JMT, Wonderland) generally aren't passable until July.
