Land Use Trail: The Vista View

The wide break in the trees before you was cleared by John Gelston Floyd Jr. in the late 19th century. Called the “Vista,” this clearing was intended to provide a view to the shore of the bay and allow the ocean breeze to travel up to the house.

Around 1900, he established “Meadow Ground Path,” a boardwalk at the end of the Vista to offer guests a way to view the salt meadows without getting their feet wet.

When to go: hiking seasons vary widely with elevation, latitude, and snowpack. Through-hikers traditionally start the AT in March-April (Springer northbound) and the PCT in late April (Campo northbound). High-elevation western trails (CDT, JMT, Wonderland) generally aren't passable until July.
